The Electronic Garden

The Electronic Garden (1979-1985) is a cybernetic sculptural environment of movement, color and sound. There are nine ‘plants’ in the Garden each made up of a cluster of separate ‘blooms’ constructed of acrylic plastic and stainless steel. Electromagnets stir each piece as though by the wind while concealed lighting is transmitted through the clear plastic forms causing them to change color and glow as integrated circuits generate sounds with the random repetition of nature. To activate the Garden spectators are encouraged to clap, whistle, sing or speak to the sculptures as they would to a pet.
